Former Ga. Rep. Barr picked as Libertarian candidate
The Libertarian Party on Sunday picked former Republican Rep. Bob Barr to be its presidential candidate after six rounds of balloting.

Barr beat research scientist Mary Ruwart, who also sought the party's presidential nomination unsuccessfully in 1983, on the final ballot. The vote was 324-276. Read more

Wildfires force evacuations in central Florida
Wildfires fuelled by dry, windy weather have destroyed about 50 homes on Florida's central Atlantic coast and driven hundreds of residents away as the governor declared a state of emergency.

Fires in Palm Bay in Brevard County claimed about 50 homes and 3,500 acres. Pupils at two schools were dismissed early as a precaution. Read more

Obama takes North Carolina, Clinton wins Indiana
Barack Obama took a big stride towards the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday with a thumping victory over Hillary Clinton in North Carolina, while she eked out a wafer-thin win in Indiana.

Well after midnight, hours after they declared the North Carolina result, US networks said the former first lady had taken Indiana by a few thousand votes for a victory margin of 51 percent to 49 percent. Read more
