1993: Started his own law firm with partner David Kirby, concentrating on personal injury law.
1998: Received 51 percent of the vote in the general election to win a Republican incumbent's seat in the U.S. Senate.
2001: Edwards, along with John McCain, acted as chief sponsor of the Bipartisan Patient Protection Act.
2003: Formally announced his candidacy for the 2004 presidency.
2004: After dropping out of the race, Edwards named as John Kerry's vice presidential running mate on the Democratic ticket.
2005: Left the U.S. Senate when his term expired. Later became director of the Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Other Facts
Edwards had no previous political experience before winning the 1998 U.S. Senate election in North Carolina.
